In Furcadia, we make a distinction between two kinds of Let's Pretend. The most popular and common one is "Freeform"; we call it "Persona Roleplay" because all it requires is taking the very first step towards roleplay: choosing to play a Persona. The other is Strict Roleplaying.
For Persona Roleplay, we recommend the Village of Meovanni. For Persona Roleplay without OOC interruptions, we recommend the Village of Goldwyn (in Imaginarium). If you haven't officially agreed to any kind of limit to your character's power or background, then what you're doing is Persona Roleplaying. It doesn't mean that you can't have a very coherent adventure, or that you have no background or that what you're doing is in any way inferior to any other form of roleplay. It simply means that the standard is (of necessity) relaxed.
Persona Roleplay is Furcadia's default and, in non-private areas, we uphold one main rule, called the Consent Rule. Very simply: If somebody poses or says something that implies your cooperation, you can act like it didn't happen.
It's not just rude, it's also pointless and ignorant to call anybody a "twink" or "powergamer" in Persona Roleplay.
In Strict Roleplaying, there is a strong accent on playing in a well-defined world ("Continuity"). That might seem like a trivial thing but upholding a Continuity gives rise to a very different philosophy of play.
Here are 26 important principles to help Strict Roleplayers. Although a Persona Roleplayer might gain valuable insights by reading it, please remember that it's unfair to expect this sort of high standard from someone who hasn't agreed to play this way. Please note that this document contains no specifics on character generation, dice-rolling, theme/genre, or rules for using supernatural powers. Mastering the Art of Strict Roleplaying
It's very unlikely that you'll find "serendipitous" (spontaneous, instant) Strict Roleplaying because Strict RP takes alot of absorption of source material, familiarity with conventions of play. It is quite fragile; it's heavily disrupted by mentioning OOC things. Because of the need for more control, Strict Roleplaying takes place in private areas, and Furcadia's Staff has no time to monitor or regulate it. Nor do we wish to.
The extra work involved in Strict Roleplaying pays off in that you tend to get a more interesting experience, and it makes possible the use of character sheets, rules, and dice, all of which are optional on Furcadia.
A player-created and player-run organization is referred to as a Guild. It's generally an OOC, not IC, entity, although it can be IC as well for some. On Furcadia, every Guild is different. It has its own rules, its own staff structure. With a few very crucial and rare exceptions, the Beekin Guardians (Furcadia's security staff) are instructed not to interfere with what happens inside private Dreams, including that of a Guild.
If you want to maintain higher standards, you need to be in a controlled environment. For that reason, some Dreams are controlled by a Guild. Especially if you're looking for Strict RP, we recommend taking the effort to find and join one.
A Guild can actually have multiple leaders, but for purposes such as Dream ownership, there needs to be one person ultimately responsible. The Furcadian word for the owner of a Guild is a "Rah". The Rah can give themselves powers such as appointing "lieutenants" called "Tahneests" (Tahneesta for a female).
There are, unfortunately, many furres who won't follow rules without a definite threat that doing otherwise will get them kicked out. This is especially true in a Strict Roleplaying Guild with rules that say your character can die or be injured or be otherwise changed against your will. A Rah can choose furres to do things like enforcing the rules.
Furcadia itself is not an all-In-Character place, but instead assumes that every Dream can be its own independent world, called a Continuity. A Continuity usually has established history, established geography, "world laws" concerning the workings of such things as magic and psionics. A Continuity might include restrictions on what races may be played, what character classes exist, and what factions characters may belong to.
Many Persona Roleplayers have "personal" Continuity, that is, they have a character background that generally only they know, and they play with a good deal of respect for what has gone on before. Then again, many Persona Roleplayers feel completely comfortable disregarding events from previous sessions.
Guilds that can prove that they're more than just a passing whim are eligible to apply for a link from these official web pages and a reserved upload spot. To get this they must email their intention to "Charter", then gather enough members and having a web page... then submit a document that clearly tells prospective members what they might expect from the Guild and what they're looking for in a member or guest. Persona Roleplay Guilds *Strict Roleplay Guilds *A Strict Roleplaying Guild is technically defined as one that doesn't accept the backgrounds, events, roleplay, etc., from other Continuities.
In addition to these two categories, we also have Adult and Social (non-roleplaying) Guilds: Social Guilds Adult Guilds

The Dragonlands
Furcadia's official default Continuity (setting) is called The Dragonlands. The official Furcadia tabletop/dice RPG called "Furre!" is set in this specific game world. So are the permanent maps of Theriopolis and Goldwyn. Although we do have a Continuity, it isn't enforced. The Dragonlands were created by Talzhemir, and if there's a question of what's canon ("real") in the Dragonlands, the decision is hers. From time to time you may hear references to "The Primes", "Scarhawks", "Kasuria", etc. That's because this source material has been in wide very casual use and accepted since 1996. (At this time, Furre! is not yet completed, so expect the following documents to undergo some change.)
